End of season awards/piss up
Probably best next season to have the end of season awards at the end of the season !!

D3
The first paragraph I agree with .the owners being the main culprits.

Let's party hard after we have actually achieved something.

Been a great season...massive improvement..but if we finish 8th..that for me is par...and nothing to celebrate.

What a load of cock. These are massively well paid professionals. They got it wrong on the day. Maybe the season caught up with them. Maybe we'll end up poorly.

Re: End of season awards/piss up
It's the psychological impacts rather than the drink. You couldn't envisage a headmaster sanctioning the end of term disco in the middle of exams, even if nobody had one for 4 days. Just gets peoples heads in the wrong place.

Those that think sitting in a hotel function room watching Payet fill up his suitcase with trophies is a PARTY need to get out more.
We didn't play well yesterday.
And will be looking to play a hell of a lot better on Tuesday.

Small club mentality still... Celebrating "success" before we've even achieved anything.

There's a real danger now that we might not gain a Europa League spot which would be hugely disappointing after the season we've had.

There's two games to put it right. They have to put it right. Would be a total failure after the season we've had so far otherwise.

Stupid stupid idea.

End of season means end of season, although it cannot be blamed singularly as the reason for such a shit showing.

They've hardly trained all week either.

Re: End of season awards/piss up
Fair point, to be fair.

Surely, at least some of our players got a bit carried away the other night and that would definitely have had an impact on their performance.

I don't think alcohol was an issue but maybe a massive self congratulating party gave them all a little ego boost and lost focus.

We created enough to win the match but seemed like we wanted to over play things at times, and there was a reluctance to get stuck in.

Re: End of season awards/piss up
Physically they probably had plenty of time to recover.

Mentally it seems like they were still celebrating how good they had done this year, counting on the points to set up the big match Tuesday.

Was frustrating to watch the fanciness and low crosses, get the ball in score a couple then do that.

Think your under estimating that these guys don't drink often and that they went out after the awards and had a team piss up too.

Has a massive effect and clearly did yesterday.

Teddy Sheringham was on Goals on Sunday this morning and said the West Ham players looked 'ragged'. Thanks Tedward, I think that covers everything we need to know.

Have to agree with the OP , very strange and poor decision

Re: End of season awards/piss up
I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but I was thinking the other day that an end of season party weren't such a good idea. Two reasons. There would have been players on the piss, and psychologically you're saying it is the end, which it wasn't. We had a lot to fight for still and should have waited a couple of weeks for the pats on the back.

Re: End of season awards/piss up
I don't think it's anything to do with being pissed up, very few would have been, it's more psychological.

They have been officially 'told' the season is over once the awards are handed out and everyone's told them how great they are.

It's human nature that they will relax, switch off, start thinking about their holidays, etc.

It's poor judgement to have this event before the season is actually over.

Bungo and Nagel,

Both fair points, Moses in particular seemed to have his mind on the summer already and I'm sure that's because he knows he's leaving and probably doesn't really give a shit.

Bungo 10:14 Sun May 8
Re: End of season awards/piss up
It's not just the physical effect either, it's the mental one.

If you've had your end of season awards, then mentally it's going to contribute to an 'end of term' mentality, and thoughts of being on the beach.

As someone else said, if this just takes 5% off your performance at this level, then that's enough to have a major impact on what happens on the pitch and the result.

Re: End of season awards/piss up
Scud, difference is that in our prime we were getting hammered 1, 2, 3+ times a week. People who aren't used to it will take longer to recover.

Even then it's not so much the game 3 days later - it's the training sessions in between where they wouldn't have been 100% and that might have had a knock on effect.

Re: End of season awards/piss up
They wouldn't have their Christmas drink three days before boxing day.
It surely is wrong to be celebrating a season and giving out awards with so much still to play for.
Bad planning in my opinion.

Re: End of season awards/piss up
Watched the Salford City class of '92 documentary earlier in the season.... they had a similar do mid week before a big game and the players were shit at the weekend... Gary Neville was livid with himself for letting it happen and said never again... schoolboy error on our part... only needs to put you off your game by 5% at this level and you're fucked.
